The Johnston’s Came To Play

not many people know me by my married name - i’ve found it a little tough to let go of my scottish simpson pride!!

hi, my name is susan RICE johnston (still weird to say after 3 happily married years!)

one of the things the big man and I love to do together is play sports. golf, tennis, softball, floor Hockey (in our kitchen, with our cats), ping pong, pool, to name but a few. sports make us who we are, and playing is what we do. and sometimes I let my 6ft 4 husband beat me (sometimes I said).

but it truly does play a huge role in our lives, we have the ability to not only play together, but we have fun doing it. the older I get, the more i realise, that doesn’t happen with everyone. It’s also made me realise what’s important when it comes to relationships and friendships. i like people who like to play. and generally, people who like to play, like me.

sometimes we all take life a bit too seriously. we get caught up in the stresses and all of trials and tribulations each of us face on a day to day basis. the last 3 years, although very happily married, we’ve had a huge number of curveballs thrown our way - death in both of our families, loss of jobs, illness, and extreme differences of opinion that has meant loss of some truly great friends from years past.

a good friend said to me yesterday: Life is messy. If it’s not, you’re not really living

and even when my life gets messy, i will never forgo my extremely healthy appetite for play. 

sidenote - this just came in from our softball captain after last night’s game: The deadly johnston duo batted a combined 7 for 9 last night with:

• 2 HR
• 1 Triple
• 1 double
• 3 singles

…..and a combined 6 runs scored! told ya we like to play
